Official launch of residential curbside recycling program for City of Corner Brook

The Minister of Environment and Conservation, Tom Osborne, and the Mayor of Corner Brook, Priscilla Boutcher, today officially launched the new curbside recycling program for the City of Corner Brook.

Through a partnership with Scotia Recycling Limited and Murphy Brothers Limited, the City of Corner Brook provides a curbside recycling collection service to all households in the Corner Brook area. The curbside program asks residents to voluntarily place recyclable materials such as newspapers, flyers, glossy magazines, telephone books, office papers, soft-covered books, corrugated cartons, file folders and catalogues into transparent blue plastic bags and place them on their curbside along with the regular garbage.

Minister Osborne said he is extremely pleased with the cooperation that the department and the MMSB have received from the City of Corner Brook and is delighted the city has officially launched a curbside recycling program for its residents which will permit curbside collection of cardboard and paper for recycling during regular garbage collection. "Congratulations to the City of Corner Brook, its business partners and its residents for their commitment to providing such a service that will protect our environment."

Premier Danny Williams, MHA for the district of Humber West, said: "I commend the City of Corner Brook for putting in place a paper and cardboard residential curbside recycling program. The residents of Corner Brook continue to show leadership and take action to protecting our environment."

"I am very excited that we are now in the position to commence the curbside recycling program," said Mayor Boutcher. "Many environmental and economic benefits are derived from recycling and we encourage everyone to participate in this program."

Mayor Boutcher noted that Corner Brook City Council is very optimistic that this recycling program will help achieve the citys goal to extend the life of the Wild Cove landfill site. "We will continue to work with the provincial government in helping to establish a modern waste management strategy in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible."

The Department of Environment and Conservation and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) partnered with the City of Corner Brook by providing funding to assist with the initial capital investment for this initiative. The MMSB has also supported the development of a public education campaign to educate residents about this recycling program.

The MHA for the district of Humber East, Tom Marshall, said: "The community plays a vital role in helping to protect our environment. This initiative demonstrates a commitment to work together for a healthier environmental future for Corner Brook, and is an important step to protecting our environment now and for future generations."
