Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Port aux Basques to Belle Isle (Appalachian) Hiking Trail                                (Reg. 1194)
Proponent: International Appalachian Trail NL Chapter Inc.

The proponent plans to develop a hiking trail along the Long Range Mountains of Western Newfoundland from Channel-Port aux Basques in the south to Belle Isle in the north. The proposed trail will be an extension of the US Appalachian Trail and International Trail from New Brunswick to the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec. The Western Newfoundland section will comprise 550 kilometres of new non-contiguous walking/hiking trail connected to existing trails and roads to cover the route. The trail will be approximately one metre wide over original soil with no bridges or boardwalks. The trail is planned to be developed over a five-year period beginning in early summer. The undertaking was registered on May 11, 2005; public comments are due by June 16, 2005; and, the minister's decision is due by June 25, 2005.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.


UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

(1) District 9 Five-Year Operating Plan Amendment                                      (Reg. 1172)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd.

(2) Eddies Cove East to Castor River South Snowmobile Trail                           (Reg. 1178)
Proponent: Long Range Riders Snowmobile Club

(3) Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Forest Management District 16 Amendment               (Reg. 1173)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd.

The minister has released the District 16 Amendment from further environmental assessment review subject to the following condition:

  • Development of a detailed harvesting plan for the Hinds Lake Harvest Area K16-06, in consultation with, and for the approval of, Inland Fish and Wildlife Division.
