Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

1. Garnish Pond (Marystown) ATV Trail                                                      (Reg. 1192)
Proponent: Creston North Trail Association Inc.

The proponent plans to construct a 2.5 kilometre All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) trail at Garnish Pond on the Burin Peninsula. The proposed trail will connect the existing trail at the southeast end of Garnish Pond with the trail on the southwest end of the pond. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in late June. The undertaking was registered on April 29; public comments are due by June 10; and the minister's decision is due by June 13.

2. Crown District 15 Five-Year Plan Amendment Kennedy Lake                           (Reg. 1193)
Proponent: Department of Natural Resources

The proponent proposes an amendment to the District 15 Five-Year Forest Harvesting Plan near Kennedy Lake in the Bonne Bay area. The amendment is needed to provide additional harvesting areas for local sawmills. The majority of the amendment area is already approved for domestic harvesting; however, a change to commercial harvesting is being requested. The Kennedy Lake amendment area covers a total of approximately 550 hectares of which 378 is considered productive forest. The harvest operation will consist of an integrated sawlog/pulpwood operation using manual felling and forwarder and/or snowmobile extraction. The undertaking was registered on May 4; public comments are due by June 10; and the minister's decision is due by June 18.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PLAN ACCEPTED AS SATISFACTORY:

Rencontre East Transmission Line (Interconnection)                               (Reg. 1149)
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro

The minister has accepted the Environmental Protection Plan (EPP) for the Rencontre East Transmission Line (Interconnection) as satisfactory on April 26.


UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Buchans to Duck Pond Mine Transmission Line                               (Reg. 1183)
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro
