Assessment Bulletin
Environment and Conservation Minister
Tom Osborne has announced the following event relative to Part 10
Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.
UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:
Hay Lake (Labrador West) Reclamation Project
(Reg. 1190)
Proponent: Wabush Mines; Cliffs Mining Co., Managing Agent
The proponent plans to continue excavation of the open pit mining
operation (Scully Mine), such that waste rock and ore will be
removed from the area surrounding Hay Lake, a water body within the
mine lease area. Scully Mine is located approximately five
kilometres west of Wabush, Labrador. Hay Lake is located at the
northeastern corner of the open pit complex. The undertaking will
realize continued resource extraction within the mining lease area
of the Scully Mine. Hay Lake will be drained to allow access to the
ore body adjacent to it and to assure the safety of the mining
operation. Hay Lake has been surveyed and found to comprise an area
of 11.7 hectares; the lake's mean depth is 1.6 metres; and maximum
depth is four metres. Draining of Hay Lake is scheduled to begin at
the end of June in 2005. The undertaking was registered on April 11,
2005; public comments are due by May 17, 2005; and the minister's
decision is due by May 26, 2005.
The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved
and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are
invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and
are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
