Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Plateau Dolomite Quarry, East of Wabush Lake                                            (Reg. 1188)
Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC)

The proponent plans to replace the Leila Wynne Quarry for the Carol Project at Labrador City by developing a new quarry eight kilometres to the south on land currently held by IOCC. The 300 Kt (kiloton) of dolomite currently needed per year is projected to increase to 400 Kt over the 20-year life of the quarry. The site will be accessed by a 50 metre road west off Javelin Road, and a minimum 100 metre buffer will be maintained between Wabush Lake. The proponent intends to develop the quarry in stages commencing as early as July 2005 with the salvaging of timber and stripping of overburden. Drilling and blasting is planned for January - March 2006, and quarrying at the new site is projected to commence in July 2006. The project was registered on April 6, 2005; public comments are due by May 11, 2005; and, the minister's decision is due by May 21, 2005.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
