Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

(1) CBPP Forest Management District 9 (Three Corner Pond) Amendment
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited                                        (Reg. 1172)

The proponent proposes an amendment to its Forest Management District 9 Five-Year Operating Plan 2001-2006. Forest Management District 9 is located on the north central region of the Island between Seal Bay and White Bay. The amendment applies to a proposed total timber harvest of 98,780 cubic metres covering an area of 1,097 hectares near Three Corner Pond, located to the northwest of Dawes Pond, in the Millertown Junction Area. An additional six kilometres of primary forestry road are planned for the amendment. Road construction and harvesting is scheduled to begin as early as June 1, 2005 and continue until December 31, 2006. The undertaking was registered on January 21, 2005; public comments are due by February 28, 2005; and, the minister's decision is due by March 7, 2005.

(2) Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Forest Management District 16 Amendment
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited                                                  (Reg. 1173)

The proponent proposes amendments to its Forest Management District 16 Five-Year Operating Plan 2002-2006. Forest Management District 16 is located on the Northern Peninsula, bounded by White Bay in the east, Gros Morne Park in the west, and Gaff Topsails in the south. The amendments apply to a proposed total timber harvest of 148, 668 cubic metres in the Burnt Hill Lake (51,421 cubic metres), Hinds Lake (40,424 cubic metres), Kitty's Brook (17,852 cubic metres), and Goose Lake Road (38,971 cubic metres) operating areas. No primary forest access roads are proposed. Road construction and harvesting is scheduled to begin as early as April 1, 2005 and continue until December 31, 2006. The undertaking was registered on January 21, 2005; public comments are due by February 28, 2005; and, the minister's decision is due by March 7, 2005.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
