Residential curbside recycling program announced for City of Corner Brook

The Minister of Environment and Conservation, Tom Osborne, and the Mayor of Corner Brook, Priscilla Boutcher, today announced a new curbside recycling program for the City of Corner Brook.

The curbside program, which will start on June 1, 2005, will collect paper and cardboard from residents of the City of Corner Brook. Through a partnership with Scotia Recycling Limited, the City of Corner Brook will provide its residents with a cost efficient and effective way to collect and recycle paper fibre. The key objective of this recycling initiative is to achieve the waste diversion goals of the provincial waste management strategy.

Minister Osborne said he is extremely pleased that a residential curbside recycling initiative will be implemented in Corner Brook. "I commend the City of Corner Brook, its business partners, and its residents for their commitment to such an important environmental initiative," said Minister Osborne. "This curbside recycling program will help us in our efforts to divert 50 per cent of waste from our landfills, as outlined in the provincial waste management strategy, while at the same time support economic and employment opportunities in the recycling industry."

The minister added that government is committed to working with municipalities around the province as it moves forward to achieve a modern waste management system in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Mayor Boutcher said Corner Brook City Council is very excited to be able to introduce a curbside recycling program for its residents, which will permit curbside collection of cardboard and paper for recycling during regular garbage collection. "This has been a major issue on councils agenda for several years and we are very pleased to be able to partner with the provincial government and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, as well as Scotia Recycling and Murphy Brothers Ltd. on this initiative. The implementation of a curbside recycling program will certainly lead to increased waste diversion and environmental improvements at the landfill site in Wild Cove."

The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) will partner with the City of Corner Brook by providing funding to assist with the initial capital investment for this initiative. The MMSB will also support the development of a public education campaign for this project.

Premier Danny Williams, MHA for the district of Humber West, said: "I am very pleased to see a curbside paper recycling project for Corner Brook. This initiative demonstrates government's commitment to sound environmental practices for our province. I look forward to its results and encourage all residents of Corner Brook to fully participate in this worthwhile project."

The MHA for the district of Humber East, Tom Marshall, said: "The people of Corner Brook take great pride in their city and have a keen desire to protect their environment. This program reflects the progressive attitude that the citizens of Corner Brook have toward the importance of protecting their environment. I am pleased to say that I am also working with Minister Tom Osborne on other potential environmental initiatives for the district of Humber East in the future."
