Minister announces appointment to Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Advisory Council

Tom Osborne, Minister of Environment and Conservation, announced today that Dr. Len Zedel of St. John�s has been appointed to the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Advisory Council (WERAC).

The Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Advisory Council advises government on the establishment and management of wilderness and ecological reserves within the province.

"Dr. Zedel is indeed an excellent addition to WERAC," said Minister Osborne. "We believe he will make a valuable contribution to this important advisory council. Government values the advice given by all members of WERAC, who play an important role in our efforts to ensure the preservation of our wilderness and ecological reserves and the protection of natural areas in our province."

The Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Advisory Council consists of 11 members who are appointed for three years. Other members of WERAC include Bill Montevecchi, Portugal Cove;
Laura Jackson, St. John's; Luise Hermanutz, Portugal Cove; Tony Ryan, Port Saunders; Christine Doucet, Corner Brook; Bruce Porter, Lewisporte; Peter Genge, Labrador City; Phyllis Baird, St. Andrew's; John McCarthy, St. John's; and Bill Kelly, Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

BIOGRAPHY

Len Zedel
Len Zedel is currently an associate professor (Physical Oceanography) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He has been an active member of the Natural History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador since 1991 and is currently vice-president of the society. Mr. Zedel has extensive experience in helping to protect our environment and natural heritage, including reviews of environmental assessment reports, work on ocean pollution, underwater noises and offshore oil developments, and participation in integrated resource management and forest management planning.
