Stephenville learner wins Council of the Federation Literacy Award

A resident of St. Georges has been recognized by Canadas premiers for her achievements in improving her literacy skills.

Jamie Garland is the Newfoundland and Labrador recipient of the inaugural Council of the Federation Literacy Award. The award was created by the premiers in 2004 to recognize exceptional literacy accomplishments and the importance of lifelong learning.

Premier Danny Williams joins Tom Hedderson, Minister of Education, and Joan Burke, MHA for St. Georges-Stephenville East, in congratulating Ms. Garland on her dedication to overcoming challenges and embracing educational opportunities at the Bay St. George Learning Centre in Stephenville.

"On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I am pleased to recognize Jamie for her dedication and her commitment to improving her skills, particularly in reading and math," said Premier Williams. "World-class education is among this governments highest priorities. Jamies dedication to schooling and improving her education is highly commendable and makes her very worthy of this prestigious award."

"As a government, we are committed to an education system based on access and opportunity, with an objective to encourage life-long learning," said Minister Hedderson. "Life-long learning should be a goal for all of us. Jamie is living proof that you are better prepared for emerging opportunities when you have the skills you need to succeed."

"It is a pleasure to offer my congratulations to Jamie on this outstanding accomplishment. Jamies hard work and determination to succeed is inspiring for all of us, and especially so for others who, like Jamie, may have their own unique challenges to overcome on their way to achieving their educational goals," said MHA Joan Burke. "I look forward to hearing of her future successes."

Ms. Garland will be presented with a Council of the Federation Literacy Award certificate and an engraved medallion this fall. The selection criteria for this years award included residents who have participated in an Adult Basic Literacy or Adult Basic Education program for at least six months, their progress during that time, if they helped others along the way, and if they overcame adversity to reach this achievement.
