Minister releases
Indicators 2005 - A Report on Schools
Education Minister Tom Hedderson
today released Indicators 2005 - A Report on Schools, the second
consecutive provincial report of its kind to provide school-level
data on each K-12 school in Newfoundland and Labrador.
"The first Indicators document, released last year, was very
well-received," Minister Hedderson said. "It was clear that
educators, administrators, researchers and parents are interested in
seeing a broad range of statistical data on individual schools,
including information on student achievement, graduation rates,
attendance rates, participation in extra-curricular activities and
average class size."
The scope of the document was expanded this year to provide
additional information on student achievement and school life.
Included, for example, are the results from the 2003 Programme for
International Student Assessment (PISA), which show significant
advances in Newfoundland and Labradors educational standing, both
nationally and internationally, as well as an analysis of the
results of a Quality of School Life (QSL) survey administered to
students throughout the province.
The documents main subject matter, however, remains school-based
statistical data designed to show parents, teachers, administrators
and others how their children and their schools are performing - and
where there is room for improvement.
"People may choose to compare statistics from this year to last to
see if the strategies they developed to improve performance are
having the desired effect," Minister Hedderson said. "This is the
information a school community needs to see, on a regular basis, to
help them be the very best they can be."
Indicators 2005 was produced in co-operation with the provinces
school districts in an ongoing effort to make the educational system
accountable to the people it serves. School- level information
contained in the document, as well as historical data, is available
through the Department of Educations K-12 School Profile System
