Director of education
appointed to Labrador Board
Education Minister Tom Hedderson and
Guy Elliott, chair of the Labrador School Board, are pleased to
announce today that Cindy Fleet has been appointed as director of
education for the Labrador School Board.
"I am delighted Ms. Fleet has accepted this position," said Minister
Hedderson. "She has a long history in the Labrador education system
and brings years of invaluable service to the position. I am
confident her leadership and administrative experience will help
build a strong and vital learning environment for all those involved
in the delivery of education in Labrador."
Guy Elliott, chair of the Labrador School Board, is delighted the
position has been filled with such a strong voice for Labrador
students and administrators. "Ms. Fleet has been an untiring
advocate for Labrador students in her many years as teacher and
administrator. I am confident she will continue to advance the
necessity for a quality education for all students in the region. I
wish her all the best as she embarks on this new and challenging
opportunity."
In recent months, Ms. Fleet was acting director of the Labrador
Board. Prior to that, she was a teacher, principal, and assistant
director of programs for the board, which has a professional and
support staff of 700, and a student population of 4,600. She holds a
masters degree in education administration from Memorial
University, and has undertaken numerous and varied professional and
leadership training opportunities over the years. Ms. Fleet is
currently vice-president (representing Western/Labrador regions) of
the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Directors of Education,
and a member of the Innu Working Group, representing the Labrador
Board, on program matters related to devolution of education to Innu
Band Councils.
"The Department of Education has a long and productive working
relationship with Ms. Fleet. She has sat on numerous education
committees, and we know first-hand her dedication to the students of
Labrador. I look forward to working with her - and indeed the entire
board - as we continue to improve and strengthen educational
opportunities for teachers and students in Labrador," said the
minister.
