Apprenticeship Web site launched

Education Minister Tom Hedderson today announced the launch of a new Apprenticeship and Certification Web site, designed to be a one-stop information centre for students, apprentices, training institutions and employers.

The Web site, developed through the Apprenticeship Enhancement Project and funded under the Labour Market Development Agreement, is the latest in a series of departmental apprenticeship initiatives designed to ensure that the apprenticeship system is responding to the needs of students and employers in the province. Other recent initiatives undertaken by the department include the Apprenticeship Program Accreditation project and the research publication, The Apprenticeship Experience: 2003 Survey of Registered Apprentices of Newfoundland and Labrador (2004).

"Apprenticeship, through its combination of in-school and on-the-job training, is a vital component of the post-secondary education system in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Hedderson. "Successful apprenticeship training relies on the strong commitment of apprentices, business, post-secondary institutions and government. With this new Web site, we hope to provide current information to apprentices and employers about the apprenticeship system."

A key component of the new Web site is the Apprenticeship Employment Gateway which allows registered apprentices to search for employment opportunities posted by Newfoundland and Labrador employers involved in the apprenticeship system, and allows employers to post employment opportunities in their search for registered apprentices.

"With more readily available information, we expect the Web site will provide a clearer understanding of how the apprenticeship system functions in our province, training and career opportunities available, and ultimately contribute to increased involvement by all stakeholders," said Barry Roberts, chair of the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board.

To complement the launch of the new Web site, the Department of Education is also launching a promotional campaign throughout the province. Posters and brochures are currently available, and information seminars will be offered across Newfoundland and Labrador to employers, community groups, training institutions, and potential apprentices in high schools.
