Minister celebrates Family Literacy Day

Tomorrow, January 27, literacy centres, schools and libraries throughout the province will celebrate Family Literacy Day and Education Minister Tom Hedderson invites all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to get involved.

"There are great things happening in the promotion of literacy in our province," said Minister Hedderson. "Family Literacy Day gives us the opportunity to come together with our literacy partners and celebrate our successes. It also reminds us of the importance of literacy. If we want our children to grow up to be healthy and productive, they must know how to read. If we want our province to have a bright future, we must have an educated population. It s as simple as that.

"Government recognizes the importance of supporting family literacy and the vital role that parents play in the development of children s education. We take seriously the role of promoting an environment of literacy, and Family Literacy Day serves as a reminder that family literacy is a critical factor in the education and development of our youth."

Created by ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation in 1999, Family Literacy Day (FLD) is a national initiative that promotes the importance of reading and learning together as a family. Every year, on January 27, families and communities across Canada celebrate this special day at literacy-themed events coordinated by literacy organizations, schools and libraries.

Members of the public are encouraged to contact their local library or literacy provider for a list of Family Literacy Day events.
