Minister announces awarding of contract for
road work in the
Baie Verte and Windsor-Springdale districts

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced the awarding of a contract for road work in the Baie Verte and Windsor-Springdale districts under the 2004-05 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"This government is committed to providing a quality roads infrastructure for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. To that end, the provincial roads program allows for the upgrading and maintenance of major trunk roads, a key part of our provincial roads network.

"In keeping with this commitment, I am pleased to announce that Penney Paving Limited of St. Johns has been awarded a contract valued at over $1 million toward the maintenance of trunk roads in the districts of Baie Verte and Windsor-Springdale respectively," said Minister Rideout.

Road work planned for the Baie Verte district includes upgrading and paving a section of Route 391 in Harrys Harbour and Route 392 in Little Bay. In Windsor-Springdale district, a section of Route 380, Roberts Arm Road, will be upgraded and paved.

"In addition, we plan to supply and install pipe arches along Route 392, Little Bay Road, in Windsor-Springdale district," said Minister Rideout.

Paul Shelley, MHA for Baie Verte district, said the contract represents an important step in the right direction. "Residents have lobbied for years about the deplorable condition of roads in the Baie Verte district. Our government clearly recognizes the need to invest in roads infrastructure and is committed to providing the necessary resources to ensure this infrastructure is maintained."

"The awarding of this contract for paving and upgrading of a section of Route 380 is welcomed. Roberts Arm Road has been in need of upgrades for some time now. I am glad this government has committed extra funding to road work throughout the province. Also, the installation of pipe arches along Route 392, Little Bay Road, will add to the structural safety of this road," said Ray Hunter, MHA for Windsor-Springdale district.

Statistics Canada estimates that for every million dollars spent on road work, 12 direct and eight indirect jobs are created.
