Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced the awarding of a contract for road work in the Cape St. Francis and Conception Bay East-Bell Island districts under the 2004-05 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"I am pleased to announce that Rock Construction Company Limited of Paradise has been awarded a contract valued at over $796,000 for road work in the districts of Cape St. Francis and Conception Bay East-Bell Island," said Minister Rideout.

Road work planned for the districts include:

  • Upgrading and paving a section of Route 20, Wind Gap Road;
  • Upgrading and paving a section of Juniper Stump Road;
  • Recapping a section of West Mines Road, Bell Island;
  • Recapping sections of Memorial Street, Bell Island;
  • Culvert replacement on Route 20, Torbay;
  • Culvert at the bottom of Piper Stock Hill.

MHA Jack Byrne said, "I am very pleased that these areas in my district have been identified for improvement under the provincial roads program. Juniper Stump Road, Wind Gap Road and Bauline Line especially needed upgrading which will be of great benefit to residents and visitors in my district."

MHA Dianne Whalen said, "Bell Island sees a lot of visitors every year, so it is important that the roads are in good condition. I know the residents of Bell Island will also be pleased that this work is happening."

"We are taking the province in a new direction through smart and strategic investments that will grow the economy and create job opportunities," said Minister Rideout. "We are developing a comprehensive infrastructure strategy to assist with this process."

Statistics Canada estimates that for every million dollars spent on road work, 12 direct and eight indirect jobs are created.
