Minister announces awarding of contract for road work in Lewisporte district

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works and MHA for Lewisporte district, today announced that Penney Paving Limited of St. Johns has been awarded a contract valued at more than $1.1 million for road work in the district under the 2004 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"Resurfacing major trunk roads is an important part of the provincial roads program," said the minister. "These trunk roads comprise a large portion of our provincial highway network. The maintenance and upgrading of these roads is a priority of our provincial roads program."

Road work under this contract includes:

  • upgrading and paving a section of Route 340, Lewisporte Road;
  • upgrading a section of Route 342, Little Burnt Bay;
  • road work along various sections of Route 351, Norris Arm.

"I am also pleased to announce that tenders have been called and will close on Wednesday, August 25, for road work in the Town of Embree," said the minister.

This work will be welcomed by the communities and residents of my district for the benefits it provides. It will improve the existing transportation infrastructure, thereby making the roads safer. It will also provide economic and employment benefits."

Minister Rideout said: "Government will continue to take steps toward improving transportation infrastructure in the province, as it moves forward with the development of a provincial infrastructure strategy. This strategy will be grounded in evidence-based decisions for the future."

These projects represent over one million dollars in spending on road work. Statistics Canada estimates that for every million dollars spent on road work, 12 direct and eight indirect jobs are created.
