Four provincial girls volleyball tournaments this weekend

High school girls take to the courts this coming weekend in their quest for a provincial volleyball championship. A total of 24 teams will compete in four tournaments across the province.

Cloud River Academy in Roddickton hosted and won the girls island 2A volleyball tournament, and in doing so won the right to advance to the provincial tournament. Eric G. Lambert School in Churchill Falls will host the five-team tournament. Other schools taking part include Mountain Field Academy from Forteau, Lake Melville School from Northwest River and J.C. Erhardt Memorial from Makkovik. The tournament starts 4 p.m. on Friday and continues thought Saturday culminating in the championship on Saturday evening.

Ten teams will compete in the 3A girls provincials being co-hosted by Pasadena Academy and Elwood High in Deer Lake. Playing in Division A will be Elwood High, Glovertown Academy, King Academy (Harbour Breton), Random Island Academy, and Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point). Playing out of Pasadena in Division B will be Pasadena Academy, St. James High (Port aux Basques), Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay), Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville) and Bay d�Espoir Academy.

Ten teams will also converge on Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts in the hopes of capturing the 4A girls volleyball title. This tournament will feature two divisions of five teams each, playing a round robin format with the top two teams from each division advancing to the playoffs. Competing in the Gold Division will be Regina High (Corner Brook), Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Ascension Collegiate, Lewisporte Collegiate, and Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s). Battling in the Blue Division will be Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Bishops College (St. John�s), Roncalli High (Avondale), Clarenville High and Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook). The first match starts 2:30 on Thursday with round robin games continuing throughout Friday at both Ascension Collegiate and Amalgamated Academy. The top two teams from each division meet in playoff action Saturday morning, followed by the championship game.

The Fair Play Girls Volleyball tournament is being co-hosted by Lumsden School and Gill Memorial (Musgrave Harbour). Nine schools have registered to compete at this event, which emphasized equal playing time for all players. Division A will play out of Lumsden and will include the host, Lumsden, Tricentia Academy (Arnold�s Cove), Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton) and Pasadena Academy. Competing in Division B out of Musgrave Harbour will be Gill Memorial, Smallwood Academy (Gambo), St. Michael�s (Bell Island), St. Marks All Grade (Kings Cove) and Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor). Round robin games start at 12:30 on Friday and continue Saturday morning. The top team from each division receive a bye into the semi-finals. The second and third place team from Division A will play the third and second place teams from Division B with the winners meeting the first place teams in semi-final action. The championship game will follow.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador, is sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.

All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
