School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador island girls 2a volleyball this weekend

Cloud River Academy in Roddickton will host the Island Girls 2A Volleyball Championships this weekend on behalf of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador. Eric G. Lambert School in Churchill Falls will host the provincial tournament in two weeks. Because of the excessive travel costs associated with a provincial tournament in Labrador, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador hosts an island tournament with the winner qualifying for the tournament in Labrador, which will feature the island winner plus winning 2A schools from each of the zones in Labrador.

The island tournament this weekend, will feature eight teams in a two division round robin format. In Division A, Holy Cross High (Eastport), Belanger High (Doyles), Christ the King School (Rushoon) and John Watkins Academy (Hermitage) will play against each other. Facing off in Division B will be the host, Cloud River Academy, Grandys River Collegiate (Burnt Islands), St. Annes (Conne River) and Main River Academy (Sops Arm). The top two teams from each division will advance to the playoff matches on Saturday. Games get underway at 9 a.m. Friday and continue throughout Friday and Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m on Saturday.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador are again sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship award medal. The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals.

All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
