Runners from all over the province will converge in Stephenville this weekend, as Stephenville High hosts School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) Provincial Cross Country Running Championships. Seven qualification meets have been held around the province to narrow the field of competitors. A total of four team championship banners will be awarded.

An invitational elementary school event will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, preceding the SSNL events. The first SSNL event is the Junior Girls Run, which is run over a 2000 metre course. Teams that have qualified for the event include Baltimore High (Ferryland), St. Lawrence Academy, Glovertown Academy, Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island), Stephenville High, Stephenville Middle School, Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point) and St. Michaels (Stephenville Crossing). For Junior Girls, independent runners are from Victoria All Grade (Gaultois), Bay DEspoir Academy, Presentation Junior High (Corner Brook) and Holy Trinity High (Torbay). The Junior Girls race will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

The Junior Boys race next, at 11:30 a.m., over a 3000 metre course. Individual winners representing Burgeo Academy, Viking Trail, Victoria All Grade, Cow Head School Complex, New World Island Academy (Summerford) and Holy Name of Mary High (Lawn) will go to the start line against teams of runners from Brother Rice Jr. High (St. Johns), St. Lawrence Academy, Fitzgerald Academy (English Harbour West), Baie Verte High, Stephenville High and Roncalli High (Port Saunders).

The 3000 metre Senior Girls Race is next on the schedule, at 12:30 p.m. Teams competing for top honors and the championship banner include St. Kevins (Goulds), Holy Name of Mary High (Lawn), Victoria All Grade, Baie Verte High, Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove) and Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Goose Bay). They will be challenged for individual awards by runners from Roncalli High, Viking Trail Academy, Baltimore High, King Academy (Harbour Breton), Regina High (Corner Brook) and Fitzgerald Academy (English Harbour West).

The final race of the day is the Senior Boys 5000 metre race, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Team athletes will be representing Fatima Academy (St. Brides), Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Glovertown Academy, Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island), Stephenville High, Regina High (Corner Brook), Roncalli High (Port Saunders) and Menihek High (Labrador City). They will be joined by individual competitors from Marystown Central High, Victoria All Grade, New World Island Academy, St. Catherines Academy (Mount Carmel), Baie Verte High, St. Marys All Grade (Marys Harbour) and Holy Heart of Mary (St. Johns).

Teams consist of five runners. Team total points are awarded based on the finishing position of the top four runners on each team. (One point for first, two for second, and so on) The team in each of the four divisions with the lowest point total will win the SSNL championship banner. Individual gold, silver and bronze will be awarded to the top three finishers in each race.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

All the School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
