School Sport Newfoundland and
Labrador boys soccer and girls slo-pitch this weekend
School Sports Newfoundland and
Labrador kicks off its calendar of provincial championships this coming
weekend as teams take to the softball fields and soccer pitch. Qualification
tournaments for girls slo-pitch and boys soccer have taken place and four
champions will be crowned this coming weekend.
Stephenville High School is a
busy venue over the next few weeks with many tournaments being hosted there.
This coming weekend, Stephenville High will host both the 4A boys soccer and
the 4A girls slo-pitch. The 4A boys soccer gets underway 10:00 a.m. Friday
morning and features six teams in a two-division format. Division A will see
action between Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s), Stephenville High and
Carbonear Collegiate. Division A games take place at Stephenville High
Field. Division B will be played at Stephenville Middle School Field and
will feature O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Marystown Central High and
Gonzaga High (St. John�s). Friday�s games are scheduled for 10:00 a.m.,
1:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The top two teams from each division will play in
the cross-overs at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning with the third place teams
facing off at 11:00 a.m. in the consolation game. The championship game is
set for 1:00 p.m.
The 4A girls slo-pitch
tournament, also hosted by Stephenville High, will feature five teams
playing in a round-robin format. Teams vying for the championship banner
include the host, Stephenville High, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap),
Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Holy Trinity High (Torbay) and Roncalli
High (Avondale). Round-robin games will be played at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m.,
2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The
cross-over games will be played 10:30 a.m. followed by the championship game
at 12:00 noon.
St. Lawrence Academy and Holy
Name of Mary in Lawn will co-host the boys 3A soccer tournament. Six teams
will compete in this tournament in a two-division format as well. Division A
will be played at St. Lawrence and will include St. Lawrence Academy, Indian
River High (Springdale) and Belanger High (Doyles). Division B featuring
Holy Name of Mary, Mobile High and Mealy Mountain High (Goose Bay) will play
the round-robin games in Lawn. Games are scheduled at both venues for 9:00
a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The cross-over games will see
action from the top two in each division and are scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
The girls 3A slo-pitch
championships will be hosted by Baltimore High in Ferryland. Eight teams
will compete for top honours in the tournament which will be run in a
two-division format. Division A will play at the Baltimore Field and will
see action from Baltimore, Fogo Island Central High, Burgeo Academy and
Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony). Division B will play out of the
Witless Bay Field and will feature Stella Maris High (Trepassey), Roncalli
High (Port Saunders), Christ the King School (Rushoon) and Cape John
Collegiate (LaScie). Games get underway 10:30 a.m. at Baltimore and 11:00
a.m. in Witless Bay. Round-robin action continues throughout the day and
into Saturday. The top two teams from each division will advance to the
cross-over action scheduled for 11:45 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The
championship game will be played at 2:45 p.m..
In its continuing effort to
emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in
conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring
the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship
Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual
sportsmanship medal.
The top teams will be rewarded
with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will
also receive the coveted championship banner.
All the School Sports
Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by the School Milk
Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and
Labrador.
