Minister and Host Committee announce gold sponsors for 2004 Summer Games

Paul Shelley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation; Sam Synard, Chair of the 2004 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games Host Committee; and Clyde Jackman, MHA for Burin - Placentia West, today announced the gold sponsors for the 2004 Summer Games. The games are scheduled for Marystown from August 7-14. They also provided an update on the status of the games, including naming two new female sports to be added this year.

"The 2004 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games represents 30 years of hosting the games program in the province," said Minister Shelley. "The games program provides an opportunity for up to 1,600 athletes, coaches and managers from all regions of the province to participate in a multi-sport event that fosters sportsmanship and the development of athletic skills. Government is committed to this event so that our youth can experience the spirit of athletic competition and enjoy the hospitality that the host community of Marystown has to offer."

Gold sponsors for the 2004 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games include Aliant, AMKC (Aker Maritime Kiewit Contractors), Atlantic Lottery Corporation, Dominion Stores, Newfoundland Power, Browning Harvey, The Southern Gazette and VOCM. Gold sponsors contribute at least $25,000 in cash or in kind to the games. Over 20 silver and bronze sponsors have also been secured.

"The 2004 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games would not be possible without the support of our gold sponsors," said Sam Synard. "These corporate sponsors recognize the importance of the summer games and have contributed to the continued development of athletes in the province. We thank them for partnering with the host committee in ensuring the success of the 2004 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Marystown."

This years event will feature nine sports, including athletics, ball hockey, baseball, beach volleyball, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and tennis. The 2004 Summer Games will feature female ball hockey and slo-pitch softball as sports for the first time since the inception of the games. This years games will also include participating teams from St. Pierre et Miquelon in recognition of the anniversary of 500 years of French presence in the province. A total of nine regions will attend the games.

Clyde Jackman, MHA for Burin-Placentia West, said the Town of Marystown is well poised to host this years event. "Marystown is no stranger to hosting sporting events, having hosted a regional games in 2001 and numerous other provincial and national events. Over 100 volunteers have been involved in the initial preparation of the games and another 900 are expected to volunteer during the week-long event, demonstrating the incredible volunteer base and tremendous community support that will ensure that the 2004 Summer Games are a great success."

The Newfoundland and Labrador Games is a program of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Held every second year, alternating winter and summer, the games, the largest multi-sport event staged for youth in the province, bring together young athletes from 11 to 18 years of age from all regions of the province.
