Provincial historic sites to open on June 21

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Paul Shelley today announced that the 10 provincial historic sites across the province will open for the summer season on Monday, June 21.

"Provincial historic sites demonstrate the provinces unique culture and heritage in various regions of the province," said Minister Shelley. "The sites continue to be a popular tourist attraction, with over 61,000 tourists and 461 groups visiting the sites in 2003."

Provincial historic sites include Commissariat House (St. Johns), Quidi Vidi Battery (St. Johns), Hearts Content Cable Station, Trinity Interpretation Centre, Hiscock House (Trinity), Lester-Garland Premises (Trinity), Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, Mockbeggar Plantation (Bonavista), Beothuk Interpretation Centre (Boyds Cove) and the Point Amour Lighthouse (Labrador Straits).

All sites will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until the Labour Day weekend. After this date, most sites will be open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Quidi Vidi Battery and the Mockbeggar Plantation will be open by appointment only. Admission is $3.00 for adults and free for children ages 12 and under.

Special features taking place at provincial historic sites this summer include:

Commissariat House - Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland will present the Michael Crummey play Salvage: The Story of a House on Thursday and Friday evenings during the months of July and August. Staged on location, 10 actors tenant the rooms of Commissariat House, the house itself is as much a character as the people who haunt it. More than the story of a house, though, Salvage is a story of loss, love and the beauty of the written word. Admission is $22 for adults and $18 for students, seniors and artists.

Beothuk Interpretation Centre - An open house on June 21 will celebrate Aboriginal Awareness Day.

Mockbeggar Plantation - Canada Day celebrations will take place on July 1 at the home of F. Gordon Bradley, an instrumental figure in Newfoundland's entry into Confederation with Canada in 1949.

Heart's Content Cable Station - An open house will take place on July 27 to commemorate the 138th anniversary of the successful landing of the transatlantic cable. The site will also feature an enhanced Company Town exhibit this season.

Cape Bonavista Lighthouse - 161st anniversary of the lighting of the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse will take place on September 11.

Hiscock House - Look for special domestic interpretation including baking, sewing on a treadle machine and gardening at the Hiscock House in Trinity.
