Minister announces 2004 heritage grants

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Paul Shelley today announced over $160,000 in heritage grants this year for the continued promotion and preservation of cultural heritage across the province. Funding will be used to support exhibits, public lectures, historical research and the conservation of artifacts.

"The number of community museums and community archives in Newfoundland and Labrador continues to grow with 160 museums and 95 archives in the province, accounting for more than the three other Atlantic provinces combined," said Minister Shelley. "Government is committed to the continued support of our cultural heritage through the direct support of provincial museums and archives, and the continued support of the associations representing them."

Grants were awarded based on a number of factors, including whether or not an institution was responsible for a building; cared for a collection of artifacts or documents; had a local, regional or provincial mandate; or operated an office. The more criteria met by an institution, the higher the grant. A total of $85,700 and will be distributed to institutions province-wide.

Community museums and archives are represented by two associations, which provide their members with useful services - the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANL) and the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives (ANLA). Both associations received funding under the Heritage Grants Program.

MANL received $50,000 through the Heritage Grants Program. In addition to its regular programs aimed at improving the quality of museums, MANL will develop a Web-based course focussed on the training of seasonal staff in collaboration with museum associations in the Atlantic provinces, the only project of its kind in Canada. MANL will also develop other distance learning courses using video-conferencing and will host a conference on how museums can increase revenues using non-traditional methods.

ANLA received $26,000 through the Heritage Grants Program for the continued professionalization of the community archives of the province. In addition to its regular training courses, ANLA will continue to help archives better preserve their collections and make them more accessible to users.
