Boys hockey and girls basketball provincial tournaments this weekend

Five school sport champions will be declared this coming weekend as the boys take to the ice and the girls to the hardwood. Champions will be decided in girls 2A, 3A and 4A basketball and boys 3A and 4A hockey. Qualification tournaments have been played and teams have advanced to the provincial championship.

Fatima Academy in St. Brides is the host site for the five-team 2A girls basketball tournament. The tournament will be run in a round-robin format with the top teams reaching the playoff on Saturday. Teams in contention include the host Fatima Academy, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Belanger Memorial (Doyles), D.C. Young School (Port Hope Simpson) and Menihek High (Labrador City). The tournament gets underway at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, with games scheduled throughout Thursday and Friday. The opening ceremonies will take place at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday. Playoff games are set for 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., Saturday morning, with the winners facing off in the championship game at 2:00 p.m.

Viking Trail Academy in Plum Point is the host school for the 3A girls basketball championships. Six teams will be vying for the championship banner in this tournament. Playing in Division A will be Mobile Central High, St. Catherine�s Academy (Mount Carmel) and Fogo Island Academy. Competition in Division B will be between Viking Trail Academy, J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate) and Baie Verte High.

The tournament kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning and continues throughout the day with round-robin action. The opening ceremonies will take place at 5:30 p.m., Friday. The placings from the round-robin play on Friday will determine all games on Saturday. The first-place team from each division will receive a bye, while the second will play the third team in the opposite division. The winner of these games will meet the first-place teams from the round-robin in the semi-final games scheduled for 12:15 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. The winners of these game will meet in the championship game set for 6:00 p.m.

Laval High School in Placentia will host eight teams in the girls 4A basketball championships. The tournament will be run in a two-division format with the top two teams from each division advancing to the playoff round. Competing in the red division will be Laval High, St. Kevin�s (Goulds), Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s) and Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor). Competition in the gold division will be between Elwood High (Deer Lake), Roncalli High (Avondale), Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook) and Mount Pearl Senior High. The tournament kicks off on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. and continues throughout Thursday and Friday with round-robin action. The opening ceremonies will take place 4:30 p.m. on Thursday evening.

The top two teams from the round-robin will advance to the playoffs on Saturday, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The winner of these games will meet in the championship game at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Sixteen boys hockey teams will be in action this weekend as well competing in the 3A and 4A hockey championships. Roncalli Central High in Port Saunders is the host school for the 3A hockey tournament. Eight teams will play in a two-division format. Facing off in Division 1 will be J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Leo Burke Academy (Bishop�s Falls), Baltimore High (Ferryland) and the host, Roncalli. Competing in Division 2 will be Baie Verte High, Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Fogo Island Central High and Elwood High (Deer Lake).

The first game of the tournament is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, followed by a game at 10:00 a.m. and the opening ceremonies. Throughout Thursday and Friday, a total of 12 round-robin games will be played. The top teams will advance to the semi-finals at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the championship game at 7:00 p.m.

Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown will host eight teams in the 4A hockey championships. The tournament gets underway at 9:00 a..m., Thursday morning, and continues throughout Thursday and Friday culminating in the championship game Saturday evening. Division A competition will be between Mount Pearl Senior High, Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Crescent Collegiate and Stephenville High. Facing off in division B will be Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Carbonear Collegiate and Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts).

The Boyle Cup, one of the oldest hockey trophies in North America, will be awarded to the winning team of the 4A Championships. The Boyle Cup, donated by Sir Cavendish Boyle, was first awarded in 1904. It was presented to the top amateur hockey team in Newfoundland. It was retired in the 1970s and brought back to be awarded to the best high school team in the 1980s.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador, have expanded its Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner. All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
