The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador holding the first girl�s high school hockey championships this weekend and four provincial boy�s basketball championships

The very first girl�s high school hockey champions will be declared this coming weekend in Glovertown, hosted by Glovertown Academy. Eight teams have advanced through regional qualification tournaments to compete for the first ever championship banner from School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.

The eight teams will play a round robin format in two divisions with the top two teams in each division advancing to the playoffs. Division 1 will consist of St. James Regional High, (Port aux Basques), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Fogo Island Central High and Mount Pearl Senior High. Playing out of Division 2 will be King Academy (Harbour Breton), the host Glovertown Academy, Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s) and Roncalli High (Port Saunders).

Games get underway Thursday at 9 a.m. with round robin games. The opening ceremonies will be held at 1:30 p.m. followed by the continuation of round robin games. Friday�s schedule starts at 8 a.m. and runs throughout the day with the remainder of the round robin games. The top two teams advance to the semi-finals games on Saturday morning with the winners playing in a 4 p.m. championship game.

Four School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Boys Basketball Championships will take place this coming weekend as well. Bay d�Espoir Academy will host the 2A boys tournament. Eight teams have qualified and will compete in a two division round robin format. Division A will play games out of Holy Cross School in St. Alban�s. Teams vying for the top spot include Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Stella Maris High (Trepassey), Valmont Academy (King�s Point) and Bonne Bay Academy (Woody Point). Division B will play games out of Bay d�Espoir Academy in Milltown. Facing off for action in Division B will be the host Bay d�Espoir Academy, St. Mary�s All Grade (Mary�s Harbour), Menihek High (Labrador City), and Holy Name of Mary (Lawn).

The opening ceremonies will be held at 8:45 a.m. on Friday in Holy Cross followed by round robin games in each division. The top two teams from each division will play the semi-final games at Bay d�Espoir Academy at 9 or 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the championship games.

Leo Burke Academy in Bishop�s Falls is the host school for the 3A Boys Basketball championships. Once again, eight teams will be competing in a two division round robin format. Division A will play out of Leo Burke Academy and will consist of Baltimore High (Ferryland), Leo Burke Academy, Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point) and the Central East representative to be determined. Playing in Division B will be St. Catherine�s Academy (Mount Carmel), Mobile Central High, Pasadena Academy and Piccadilly Central High.

Games are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and continue throughout the day ending with the opening ceremonies at 8:30 p.m. Games will continue Friday morning at Leo Burke as well as Grenfell Collegiate. The final round robin games will be played Saturday morning followed by the semi-final and championship game at 5 p.m.

Roncalli High in Avondale is the host school for the 4A Boys Basketball Championships. Teams have been divided into the white and red divisions, with all games being played at Roncalli High. Competing in the White Division will be Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s), Gander Collegiate, Carbonear Collegiate, and the host Roncalli High. The Red Division will see action from Bishops College (St. John�s), Fatima Academy (St. Bride�s), Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook) and Elwood High (Deer Lake).

Bishops and Fatima will face off in the opening game of the tournament followed by the opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. Four round robin games will follow with the remaining seven scheduled for Friday. The semi-finals are set for 10 and 12 Saturday morning with the winners facing off in the championship game at 4 p.m.

The final event of the weekend is the first ever Fair Play Boys Basketball Championships. Clarenville High has the honour of hosting this event. Eight teams will also compete in the event, which gives all student-athletes an opportunity to participate equally. Schools are permitted to enter in both the divisional tournaments (2A, 3A or 4A) and enter a second team in the Fair Play Division.

Division A will see action from Clarenville High, St. Kevin�s High (Goulds), Crescent Collegiate (Blaketown) and Marystown Central High. Division B will have Bishops College (St. John�s), Dunne Memorial (St. Mary�s), Lewisporte Collegiate, St. Catherine�s Academy (Mount Carmel). The tournament will be played out of Clarenville High School and Clarenville Middle School. Games get underway at 12:30, on Friday and continue throughout the day and into Saturday. The semi-final games are scheduled for 12 noon with the championship game at 1:30 p.m

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador, has expanded its Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner. All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
