Newfoundland shooters rank high at international competition

The Newfoundland and Labrador provincial air gun team have returned from the annual Canadian Air Gun Grand Prix, an international shooting competition held in Toronto. This year, individuals and teams from across Canada, the United States, Japan and China took part. In total, nine shooters and coaches from around the province took part.

Our rifle shooter meet exceeded all performance expectations. Coach Dave Woolridge of St. John's took silver in the air rifle expert class with a score of 1131 out of 1200 and was the tenth highest male shooter in the entire competition. New comers Mitchell Hunt from Croque and Chad Gosse of Tilton took fourth (1000/1200) and sixth (957/1200) in the men's sub-junior division. Both shooters set personal bests despite technical troubles with their rifle. Laurie Hearn of our last Canada Games team claimed fourth in the international junior division with 732/800. Teammate and also former Canada Games medalist, Brenda Green, also took fourth spot in ladies sub junior. In doing so, she set a new provincial record for the ladies event with 372 out of 400. Their team was a close fourth in the ladies junior division, only eight points shy of a bronze. Former Canada Games shooter Wayne Nolan, competing with the RCCAC, scored 929/1200 in the international junior event. Laurie, Brenda and Wayne come from St. Mary's Bay.

In air pistol, Derek Inken of Labrador City shot a 1058/1200 in the open class. Mitchell Hunt and Jeremy Bromely, also from Croque, shot 875/1200 and 690/1200 respectively in the sub-junior event. This left Mitchell three points shy of the bronze. Mitchell's performance was remarkable because he was the only shooter to take part in both the rifle and pistol event, shooting for a total of over seven hours in a two-day span.

All in all, this young team shows great potential for growth and, by next year's Grand Prix, can surely be contenders for medals.
