Minister announces recipients
of 2004 Athlete Assistance Grants
Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Paul
Shelley today announced that 67 athletes have received funding under the
department�s Athlete Assistance Program with a total investment of
$49,500. The purpose of the program is to provide financial assistance to
qualifying amateur athletes to help offset the costs of training and
competition.
"As an athlete and former coach, I am
pleased that 67 athletes in the province will avail of funding from the
Athlete Assistance Program to assist them to compete at national or
international sporting events," said Minister Shelley. "Over 200
applications were received for assistance this year, an increase of 20 per
cent over last year, and representative of 27 sports across the province.
The continued popularity in the program and the increase in applications is
reflective of the need for the program in the province."
The Athlete Assistance Program is open to all
residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who are registered with a provincial
sport organization recognized by the Department of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation. Eligible athletes must be competing for, and continue to compete
for, Newfoundland and Labrador at the Canada Games and other national and
regional competitions. Athletes must be attending an educational institution
on a full-time basis.
