Minister announces $221,811 in funding for silviculture projects

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today $221,811 for two silviculture projects encompassing parts of the three provincial districts - Bonavista South, Trinity North and Terra Nova. Funding for the projects is being provided through this years $7.3 million provincial silviculture program.

Minister Byrne said the provincial governments silviculture program is a key component of its overall sustainable forest management strategy.

"Ensuring the forest industry remains viable into the future is a key priority for this government. By adopting and implementing responsible silviculture strategies we are ensuring our valuable forest resource will remain productive well into the future," said Minister Byrne. "In addition, the provincial silviculture program creates meaningful employment opportunities for many individuals in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

One project, valued at $108,855, will consist of site preparation work over an area of approximately 410 hectares throughout provincial Forest Management Districts 2 and 4.

The other project, valued at $112,956, will see the planting of 1.1 million tree seedlings over various areas in provincial Forest Management District 2 totalling approximately 458 hectares. The tree seedlings were supplied by the Wooddale Provincial Tree Nursery.

It expected both projects will create 168 person weeks of employment. It is anticipated the projects will be completed by late August.
