Silviculture funding announced for project in Labrador

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, and John Hickey, MHA for Lake Melville, today announced funding in the amount of $89,986 for a silviculture project taking place in the Lake Melville and Labrador West districts.

"Investing into the future of our provincial forest resource through the planting of tree seedlings is an integral component of governments responsible approach to sustainable forest management," said Minister Byrne. "Silviculture projects help ensure healthy fibre sources are available for the future while enhancing ecosystem structure."

"I strongly support any initiative aimed at protecting the future of our forest resources throughout the province," said Mr. Hickey. "I also welcome the employment opportunities and other economic benefits this project will provide for the Lake Melville region."

This project will see the planting of approximately 512,000 tree seedlings from the Department of Natural Resources tree nursery at Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Project activity will take place over an area of 205 hectares near Happy Valley-Goose Bay, in the general vicinity of Alder Brook Road, and Long Lake near Labrador City.

This project is expected to create 48 person weeks of employment and will be completed later this month. The funding is being provided through the provincial silviculture program. This year, government will invest $7.3 million in the program.
