Silviculture funding announced for Terra Nova district

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, and Paul Oram, MHA for Terra Nova, today announced a total of $122,140 for two silviculture projects in the district. The funding is being provided through governments provincial silviculture program which this year is valued at $7.3 million.

According to Minister Byrne, responsible management of the forest resource through meaningful silviculture activity will ensure the forests of our province remain productive into the future.

"Silviculture initiatives such as these taking place throughout Terra Nova district this summer are a critical component of our provinces reforestation effort," said Minister Byrne. "In addition, such work provides a significant boost to rural economies through the creation of valuable employment opportunities."

"I am glad to see these projects commence," said Mr. Oram. "The already beautiful district of Terra Nova will see worthwhile improvement with these projects. These announcements demonstrate governments commitment to providing stable forestry management in the province. I am a strong proponent of any project that will ensure the viability of forest resources and provide meaningful employment for my district."

The first project, valued at $62,500, involves site preparation work over an area of 250 hectares. Once complete, this area will be brought up to provincial silviculture standards making it ready for the planting of tree seedlings.

The second project, valued at $59,640, consists of the planting of approximately 723,250 tree seedlings over an area of 263 hectares. The tree seedlings are being provided by the provincial tree nursery at Wooddale. It is expected both projects will create 95 person weeks of employment.
