Silviculture project approved for Cartwright - LAnse Au Clair

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, has announced funding in the amount of $55,821 for a silviculture project in the District of Cartwright-LAnse Au Clair. The funding for this initiative is being provided through the provincial silviculture program.

Minister Byrne says silviculture projects ongoing throughout Newfoundland and Labrador this year will play a vital role in maintaining a future wood supply and healthy ecosystem structure.

"The planting of tree seedlings in this area and throughout other parts of the province demonstrate governments commitment to responsible forest management," said Minister Byrne. "In addition, the provincial silviculture program creates meaningful employment opportunities for many individuals in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

Project activity will see the planting of 375,000 tree seedlings over an area of 150 hectares in the vicinity of Port Hope Simpson. The tree seedlings are being supplied from the Department of Natural Resources Tree Nursery at Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The project, which recently started, is expected to create 48 person weeks of employment and will be completed in late August.
