Illegal forestry and wildlife activity can now be reported on-line

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today the department is stepping up its efforts to combat illegal activity against the provinces wildlife and forest resources. The general public can now report illegal activity through the departments Web site.

Minister Byrne is confident the new initiative will provide conservation officers with a valuable tool to obtain the information they need to apprehend those engaged in illegal activities which threaten the provinces forest and wildlife resources.

"Newfoundland and Labradors Crown timber, wildlife and other forest resources are the common property of the people of the province. Accordingly, everybody using the outdoors has a responsibility to help protect it from poachers and other violators who do not respect or appreciate the value of natural resources," said Minister Byrne. "By providing an opportunity for the general public to report illegal activity on-line, government is taking a proactive approach toward resource protection that will help sustain our forests and wildlife for future generations.

"As crimes against our natural resources continue and offenders adopt more sophisticated methods, there is a need for residents of the province to assist ongoing efforts to apprehend these offenders. That is why I am encouraging the general public to assist our conservation officers by taking advantage of this new method to report illegal forest and wildlife activity."

Anyone wishing to report any illegal activity relating to such matters as timber harvesting, hunting and angling, trafficking in wildlife, damaging of sensitive habitats, unauthorized forest removal practices can do so by completing a submission form located at the following web site: //www.gov.nl.ca/forestry/contact/violation.htm

In addition, the public can still contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS) or the local forestry and wildlife office to report such activities.
