Minister proclaims provincial 4-H week

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, today proclaimed March 13-19 as provincial 4-H Week. 4-H is an international youth organization involving more than seven million members in 80 countries around the world.

"This organization has been bringing the youth of Newfoundland and Labrador together since 1937, teaching them leadership, community and life skills," said Minister Byrne. "It is this kind of grassroots organization that has empowered the youth of our province to develop self-confidence and leadership skills."

In 2004, over 400 young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, aged five to 21 years old, have participated in exciting club activities and 4-H projects such as agricultural, cooking, crafts and woodworking. Senior 4-H members also had the opportunity to join other Canadian 4-H members in other parts of the world to participate in exciting and educational conferences, seminars and exchanges.

"I encourage all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to recognize our youth and our volunteer leaders during 4-H Week" said Minister Byrne. "I am also confident that the skills and experiences that our youth receive from 4H will benefit our province in the future."
