Minister expresses his condolences to family of the late Claude Garland

Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, today was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Carbonear mayor Claude Garland.

"I have on many occasions worked with Mayor Garland on a number of issues concerning Carbonear and the greater Conception Bay North area," said Minister Byrne. "Mayor Garlands death came as a great shock to me. Most recently, I met with him at the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities annual convention and trade show. Mayor Garland was a great mayor who always thought of the best interests of his residents and I know that he will be greatly missed."

Claude Garland has served on Carbonear town council for 19 years and was first elected as councillor in 1985. Over the years, he has served as deputy mayor and for the last seven years was mayor.

"I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Mayor Garland. His sudden passing is a great loss to Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Byrne.
