Districts of Mount Pearl and Waterford Valley benefit from Municipal Capital Works Program

Jack Byrne, Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister, Dave Denine, MHA for the District of Mount Pearl and Harvey Hodder, MHA for the District of Waterford Valley, announced today that the City of Mount Pearl will receive $3,075,000 from the Municipal Capital Works Program.

"The Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs is pleased to contribute funding to these projects, some of which have been ongoing for a few years," said Minister Byrne. "With this work, the residents of Mount Pearl will see improvements to their municipal services."

The projects include:

  • Phase three for the city hall extension valued at $2,075,000;
  • Various road improvements valued at $1,000,000.

MHA Dave Denine said, "Given the financial circumstances that the government finds itself in, I am very pleased that government has re-confirmed its commitment for the final phase of the Centennial Square Project valued at $2,075,000. Also, with the $500,000 contribution from the provincial government and $500,000 contribution from the municipal government, the City of Mount Pearl will complete various road improvements valued at $1,000,000 this year."

Government is committed to economic development which includes making strategic investments for the benefit of the economy. Providing solid infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labradors municipalities is a necessary part of economic growth. These projects re-affirm governments commitment to community infrastructure.

"I am especially pleased that the City of Mount Pearl will see much-needed improvements to its roads," said MHA Harvey Hodder. "Mount Pearl is a major centre for Newfoundland and Labrador and having these upgrades will make the city that much more attractive to residents and visitors alike."

"We are pleased with this year's capital funding announcement," says Mount Pearl Mayor Steve Kent. "The amount of funds the city is receiving from the province is pretty well on par with what we've received in previous years. It will allow us to complete a million dollars of roads work in 2004. Like many municipalities, our capital needs are growing," notes Mayor Kent. "I look forward to continuing our positive working relationship with our MHAs, and we hope to take part in a multi-year capital funding program in 2005."
