Jack Byrne, Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister, and Paul Oram, MHA for the District of Terra Nova, today announced several projects worth $884,000.

"We are focusing on water improvements in the District of Terra Nova for this year," said Minister Byrne. "These projects will go a long way in helping a number of towns receive clean water."

The projects include:

  • In Eastport, replace water main along Church Street valued at $291,750;
  • Also in Eastport, improvements to the well collector system in the amount of $225,000;
  • Water pressure booster system in Glovertown valued at $195,000;
  • Replace existing water main along Church Street in Sandy Cove in the amount of $97,250;
  • Also in Sandy Cove, improvements to the well collector system in the amount of $75,000.

The provincial government will be contributing approximately $490,000 towards these projects and will be requesting federal government financial support under the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Infrastructure Program.

Government recognizes that investments in infrastructure are also investments in the future of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Solid infrastructure throughout the province is an integral part of this governments economic growth agenda. The total value of all work to be completed in 2004 is approximately $100 million. These projects will have an immediate positive economic impact, while laying the foundation for future growth and rural development.

MHA Paul Oram said: "My district is very important to me and these were the capital works projects which I felt needed to be addressed this year. In order to create a solid foundation to grow the economy in this province, we need to have reliable infrastructure."
