Justice minister appoints deputy chief

Minister of Justice and Attorney General Tom Marshall today announced the appointment of Robert Johnston to the permanent position of deputy chief at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC). The appointment is effective immediately.

"Inspector Johnston has been a valued and respected member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary since 1979. His strong leadership and commitment to keeping communities safe, combined with his experience and knowledge of the RNC and policing needs make him an exceptional candidate to fill this challenging position," stated Minister Marshall. "The addition of Inspector Johnston to a deputy chief position will strengthen the organizational structure and enhance the delivery of direct police operations within the RNC."

The appointment was made following a comprehensive selection process which included assessment of education, training and related experience, written and oral presentation and interview with a selection board. Other factors considered include integrity, professional excellence, community awareness and appropriate personal characteristics such as a reputation for integrity and fairness. Five applicants participated in the selection process.

"We are pleased with the quality of applicants who participated in the selection process; all were experienced competent officers and highlight the strength in qualified and capable individuals within the system," added Minister Marshall. "This process showcased the strength of individuals within the RNC, which will help us build our organization into the future."

There are two deputy chief positions at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary; Inspector Johnston joins Deputy Chief Joe Browne and will be assigned to the operations side of the RNC. The appointment of Inspector Johnson is part on an on-going re-structuring at the executive level at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. Re-structuring will also include a reclassified position of executive director of support services early in the New Year which will be responsible for non-direct policy issues including human resources, information technology and finance at the RNC.
