Government announces new RNC positions Minister of Justice and Attorney
General Tom Marshall today announced that the province has approved the
hiring of six officers to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC).
"We take very seriously the resource issues and workload pressures that the RNC has been experiencing, and we have been working diligently with Treasury Board to help alleviate the staffing shortages at the RNC," stated Minister Marshall. "Police officers play a pivotal role in keeping our communities safe. This is a small, but positive, measure to help address the demand for police services in the region." The six full-time constable
positions will be filled by officers who have recently completed their
on-the-job training with the RNC. All are graduates of Holland College. The
positions are expected to be filled immediately.
This announcement follows a move
to increase police presence in Labrador with the addition of seven RCMP
officers who will be introduced in January 2005. Resource investments
including police officers, training and equipment were also announced during
the 2004-05 provincial budget. In 2005, a minimum of 25 new officers will be
introduced to the RNC from the Police Officers Training Program at Memorial
University.
"We are making progress in improving policing services throughout the province and have been working with community leaders to help identify priority areas where additional resources are needed," added Minister Marshall. "Government remains committed to developing a long-term policing strategy including increased investment in the justice system and policing services to build stronger, safer communities."
