Annual Community Economic Development awards presented

Innovation, Trade and Rural Development Minister Kathy Dunderdale presented the provinces fourth annual Community Economic Development awards at a gala event in Rocky Harbour on the evening of November 6.

"These awards recognize the achievements of outstanding community developers from across our province," said Minister Dunderdale, in congratulating the six award winners. "These are people who work tirelessly for the betterment of our society. The six winners were drawn from a total of 65 submissions and judged by their peers to be worthy of these awards. Rural Newfoundland and Labrador contains a vast array of people and organizations such as these who work to improve our communities and our economy. I am proud to be part of a celebration honouring people who care about their neighbours and their community and are prepared to donate their time and energy to the common good. As a province, we are fortunate to have such bright, energetic and generous people."

The purpose of the Community Economic Development awards program is to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of individuals and organizations who have excelled as leaders in community economic development in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Backgrounder

NorthLink: NorthLink of Labrador endeavours to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in Labrador and other Canadian northern communities by developing opportunities for both domestic and international ventures. Through the provision of services and support, NorthLink functions as a conduit for professional business planning, coordination and relations with government, national and territorial organizations and like-minded entrepreneurs.

Harold Mullowney: Harold represents a very positive example of community-minded volunteerism in support of local and regional development. He is an educator by profession and, among his many involvements in the community, Harold has been the Mayor of Bay Bulls for the last seven years and has served on the Bay Bulls Town Council since 1990. He is president of the Irish Loop Development Board, a position he has held since the board was formed in September 1997.

Labrador Fishermens Union Shrimp Company Limited: Because of the Labrador Fishermens union, Southeastern Labrador has been able to survive the cod moratorium when other areas could not. Today, the company has more than seven hundred shareholders, all full-time bonafide fishermen from Labrador, and continues to seek new avenues to develop other communities and create more employment.

The Organizing Committee - Big Land Fair: In September 1999, the first Labrador "Big Land Fair" was born. Home-based businesses (mainly crafts people) were invited to set up booths that were intermingled with the Canada Career Week committee information booths. The Canada Career Week partners organized a variety of contests to attract an eclectic mix of the general public. Staff from Human Resources, Labour and Employment organized and supervised a childrens craft area so that parents could wander around the venue and speak with the various Canada Career Week representatives. Approximately 1,500 people attended. The event has grown to attract over 3,000 annually.

Jamie Pye: Jamie is from the small, isolated community of Lodge Bay located on the south eastern coast of Labrador. Jamies passion for technology led him to develop his own home-based business which focussed on desktop design and Web site development. Jamie has been setting an example for young people since high school as an inspiring success story and a leader in economic development.

Bride Martin: Bride Martin devoted the last 20 years volunteering her time and energy to her community, St. Vincents, making a lasting contribution to its economic and social development. She was a member of the Southern Avalon Development Association (SADA) from 1993, was elected vice president in 1995, and was chairperson of the St. Vincents local of SADA from 1993 until her retirement in March 2003. Bride devotes her life to the preservation of the history of her region and was the driving force behind the establishment of a fishermens museum in her community. She took responsibility for the training of students each year and volunteered to oversee the preservation of the artifacts during the winter months.
