Companies achieve success at international marine trade and exhibition show

Seven Newfoundland and Labrador companies participating in the 2003 International Workboat Show last month in New Orleans capitalized on new opportunities and achieved significant success. These findings are based on a questionnaire administered by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development immediately following the department-led mission in December.

Immediate sales from the international marine trade and exhibition show were reported at $1.7 million. In addition, the Newfoundland and Labrador companies secured 21 news customers, identified 112 new business leads, and contracted eight new distributors/agents for their products and services.

Industry, Trade and Rural Development Minister Kathy Dunderdale said: "The significant results of this marine trade and exhibition show are proof positive that participating in international events, such as the International Workboat Show, help our companies succeed and grow the provincial economy."

The participating companies also reported that they gathered valuable new market intelligence from various parts of the world, including Sweden, Denmark, Norway, England, Israel, and the United States.

The provincial delegation included representatives of naval architectural firms, marine industrial manufacturers and marine technology companies, including:

  • Consolidated Technologies Ltd., St. Johns;
  • Genoa Design Inc., Kelligrews;
  • ICAN, Mount Pearl;
  • Marine Industrial Lighting Systems Ltd., Mount Pearl;
  • Martins Industrial, St. Johns;
  • Rutter Technologies Inc., St. Johns; and
  • Terra Nova Marine, Mount Pearl.

The International Workboat Show is North Americas premier trade show for inland and coastal marine technology companies. Products and services profiled at the trade show this year included marine navigation and lighting equipment, marine communications products and radar systems. It is the largest and most recognized show of its kind in the world. The show attracted over 900 exhibitors and buyers from 48 different countries, and has a 25-year history.
