Minister encouraged by progress at national housing conference

Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources Labour and Employment and minister responsible for housing, met with her federal-provincial-territorial colleagues in Gatineau, Quebec on November 29-30, to discuss the development of a long-term national housing approach to provide better housing for those most vulnerable in society.

The discussions focused on attaining greater commitment from the federal government to work with the provinces and territories to achieve more flexibility and sustainability in housing programs. This new approach will enable the individual jurisdictions to address their own specific housing needs and priorities.

"I am pleased by the progress made at this recent housing conference," said Minister Burke. "The current approach to federal/provincial housing is not the most beneficial to the province, and we need more changes in flexibility to occur in order to have a more sustainable housing supply throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."
