Minister Burke to help serve breakfast in recognition of Kids Eat Smart Week

Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and MHA for St. Georges - Stephenville East, will be joining staff and volunteers at Stephenville Elementarys Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program to serve breakfast to students on October 15.

Beginning at 8:00 a.m., Minister Burkes visit is in recognition of the Kids Eat Smart Foundation of Newfoundland and Labradors "Kids Eat Smart Week". From October 12-15, Kids Eat Smart Clubs across the province are celebrating the special week which highlights the importance of child nutrition. Last week, Minister Burke visited E.A. Butler High School in Bay St. George South which had a Thanksgiving Day lunch in recognition of Kids Eat Smart Week.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to visit Stephenville Elementary to show my support for this important program," said Minister Burke. "Earlier this year, government reaffirmed its commitment to the well-being of children with a contribution of $500,000 to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation. This funding, along with in-kind donations and thousands of volunteer hours at the community and provincial levels, has made a real difference in ensuring that every child in the province attends school well nourished and ready to learn."

Since 1994, the Kids Eat Smart Foundation has helped establish more than 150 breakfast, lunch, and snack programs in schools and community centres throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. More than 4,000 volunteers are actively working in community-based groups to provide nutritious meals daily to more than 16,000 children.
