High school students make waves with government support

Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, has announced a contribution of $40,000 in funding for the "Marine Pursuits - Making Waves 2004" summer career camp. The camp is also funded by the Marine Institute, which contributes $56,000.

The Marine Pursuits camp was created to increase awareness among high school students of the career opportunities available in the marine and related industries. Participants are provided with the chance to explore various marine careers through hands-on learning activities in the field, at sea, and in the lab. During the five, week-long camps, students also learn through lectures, demonstrations, and tours of the facilities at the Marine Institute.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to get a solid, fun-filled introduction to the Marine Institute and the wonderful career options that are available to them," said Minister Burke. "It also provides students from our rural communities with the chance to experience university life in St. Johns." Participants stay at the Paton College residence of Memorial University. Staff are generally Marine Institute students or graduates.

"This is a valuable initiative for our young people and I am delighted that my department, Human Resources, Labour and Employment, is able to offer assistance," said Minister Burke. "The Marine Institute is a world-class facility and to be able to introduce students to disciplines such as marine engineering, nautical science and marine safety and survival, is truly a worthwhile experience for all participants."

Dave Denine, parliamentary secretary for the Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, will present a cheque to Leslie OReilly, executive director of the Marine Institute today at the Marine Institute. Camp participants and program coordinators will also be in attendance. The presentation will take place between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. during an informal luncheon where students will have an opportunity to share their experiences.
