Funding boost for Mother Baby Nutrition Supplement now in effect

Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, announced today that, as of July 1, those eligible for the Mother Baby Nutrition Supplement can avail of a new benefit.

In Budget 2004, government allocated $108,000 to introduce a one-time benefit of $90 for pregnant women eligible for the Mother Baby Nutrition Supplement (MBNS). The new benefit will be provided at the time of the birth of their children.

"This additional funding is just one of several initiatives that focuses on the well-being of children in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Burke. "My department has also provided funding to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation and increased our investment in the Newfoundland and Labrador Child Benefit. Human Resources, Labour and Employment and government are committed to supporting a healthy start in life for our most vulnerable children."

The Mother Baby Nutrition Supplement assists with the additional costs of maintaining a healthy diet during the pre-and post-natal periods. This and other benefits and initiatives are the result of successful partnerships with both the federal government and community agencies.
