NLIS 7 March 30, 2004 (Human Resources, Labour and Employment) Government Expands Supported Employment Program for Persons with Disabilities Human Resources, Labour and Employment Minister Joan Burke announced today that government will invest an additional $400,000 to expand the Supported Employment Program which assists individuals with developmental disabilities find and maintain employment. "This government clearly recognizes that we have an obligation to support our most vulnerable citizens," said Minister Burke. "While we must take steps to address our fiscal condition, we must also take measures to live up to our social responsibility." Last year, more than 1,800 people received employment support services from 20 employment corporations located throughout the province. "Supported employment is a proven success with tremendous community support," said Minister Burke. "I am pleased that my department is able to provide vital additional funding, particularly during these times of fiscal restraint." Supported employment is a partnership between Human Resources, Labour and Employment, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Community Employment Corporations. "We recognize that people living with disabilities can face considerable challenges as they seek and then strive to maintain employment," said Minister Burke. "With this Budget 2004 investment, government clearly endorses the philosophy of supported employment and the contribution made by community partners to facilitate full participation in the work force."
