Ministers support efforts to combat homelessness

Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources and Employment and Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and Minister responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, are encouraging Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to support Raising the Roof and their Toque Tuesday campaign.

Raising the Roof is Canadas only national homelessness charity. The organization builds awareness about homelessness and raises funds for community groups that work to combat the problem. The annual campaign, Toque Tuesday, will benefit three St. Johns groups that work daily on solutions to homelessness. They are Choices for Youth, Stella Burry Community Services and the St. Johns Native Friendship Centre Association.

"My department has close ties with each of these agencies, providing supports for their work," said Minister Joan Burke. "I recognize the importance of all organizations that work tirelessly to help the homeless. I would like to encourage everyone to get a toque and support the effort to alleviate homelessness in our province."

"Having a place to live is one of the most important necessities of life," said Minister Jack Byrne. "As the minister responsible for housing, I believe everyone has this right. By supporting Raising the Roofs fund-raising initiative, Toque Tuesday, we can work together to ensure that these three agencies continue to help the homeless or those with serious housing issues."

The Toque Campaign runs until the end of February. For more information, contact Bruce Pearce at (709) 689-9615.
