(House of Assembly)

The following statement was issued today by Ed Byrne, Government House Leader. It was also read in the House of Assembly:

House of Assembly to remain open

I rise in the House today to inform my fellow members and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador the House of Assembly will not follow its regular parliamentary calendar at this time and that the House will not be closing for the Easter Break.

This decision was made given the extraordinary circumstances facing the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador today. This government recognizes the importance of the House remaining in session during the current public service job action.

Government believes that it is critical for the House to be open at this time so that full debate can occur on this very important issue. This decision confirms this governments commitment to pursue a new approach to governance. We are determined to deliver open, accountable and effective governance. And it is in this House of Assembly, the peoples House, that this more effective governance will find its foundation.

We will defer the regular break to a time following the conclusion of the current public service job action.
