Government begins CEO selection process for new Regional Health Authorities

Health and Community Services Minister John Ottenheimer today announced the CEO selection process for the four new Regional Integrated Health Authorities (RIHA) will begin this weekend, as government continues with its transformation of the governance structure of the health and community services system.

"Creating a comprehensive and integrated system of care will be shaped with strong executive leadership," said Minister Ottenheimer. "We're committed to concluding the selection process as quickly as possible to put the best possible team of people in place to foster the transition to new RIHAs."

Chief Executive Officer positions for the Eastern, Central, Western and Labrador-Grenfell health authorities will be advertised this weekend in provincial papers. Interested candidates must submit applications on or before November 1. The Public Service Commission will assist in the selection process. The process will be guided by the incoming Board Chairs. The new CEOs will be designated and will be confirmed when the new RIHAs are in place.

Minister Ottenheimer expressed his sincere appreciation to the current leadership of the 14 existing boards. "I'm extremely impressed with their professionalism and dedication. It is my belief that we have exemplary leadership capacity in Newfoundland and Labrador."

On September 10, government announced the transformation of 14 provincial health boards to four Regional Integrated Health Authorities. "Creating fewer, more accountable health authorities is a necessary step in renewing our health and community services system and meeting client needs," said Minister Ottenheimer. "Fewer regions mean less administration and more opportunity for collaboration. Integrated boards will have the ability to focus on the full continuum of care, from community care to acute and long-term care, resulting in better service for clients."

It is anticipated that an announcement of the new Board Chairs will be made in the coming weeks, and it is hoped that the four CEOs will be named in December.
