MRI tender awarded to GE Medical Systems

A tender for the provision of a new MRI machine and related renovations at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook has been awarded to GE Medical Systems, Premier Danny Williams and Health and Community Services Minister John Ottenheimer announced today.

GE was one of three bidders and its package met all of the tender specifications. It is expected the company will be on site within two weeks and the $4.1 million project will be completed by the end of January.

"This is fantastic news for the people of the western region," said Premier Williams. "The MRI will greatly enhance the healthcare services offered in the region and its impact will be felt provincially as it relieves some of the pressure on the only MRI we have right now in St. Johns."

"Our government is committed to providing quality healthcare and meeting the health needs of all provincial citizens," reiterated Minister Ottenheimer. "Todays announcement brings us one step closer in providing better access to important health services."

"We are very grateful to the provincial government and to Premier Williams who has supported this initiative from the very beginning," noted Allan Kendall, Chief Executive Officer of the Western Health Care Corporation. "We also thank the people and organizations of western Newfoundland for their efforts to bring this technology to the western region."

Humber East MHA, Tom Marshall, is also very pleased to see this project moving forward. "The addition of the provinces second MRI is great news for the western region and for the entire province. This will mean that all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have enhanced access to this valuable diagnostic equipment."

The MRI will be located on the ground floor of Western Memorial in the space currently occupied by the Physiotherapy Department. Physiotherapy will be temporarily moved to the former delivery room on Level I while renovations are being completed for the departments new home at Monaghan Hall.

The Western Health Care Corporation has trained two technologists in the use of the MRI and radiologists are currently undergoing training.
