Charges laid resulting from explosion in Botwood

The Department of Government Services announced today that three companies and an individual have been charged for alleged violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations in relation to an explosion at Botwood two years ago.

The explosion at the Ultramar Bulk Storage Facility on June 18, 2002 resulted in injuries to two workers. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch.

Crosbie Industrial Services Ltd. has been charged with 12 violations under the act, while one of the companys employees, Jason Lidstone, is facing two charges. Ultramar Ltd. and Rancur Petroleum Services Ltd. have been charged with two violations each.

The violations relate to the alleged failure to ensure that safety procedures are followed at the workplace; that hazards relating to flammable substances, gases or vapours are removed or controlled; and to ensure that all existing or potential sources of ignition are controlled or eliminated.

The first appearance is scheduled for August 10, 2004 at Provincial Court in Botwood.
